The Green Gathering
Folks all across the UK are readying themselves for a small but epic festival. Packing their best hippy clothing, their poi and practising their hula hooping skills, as the countdown to this year’s Green Gathering begins.
The Green Gathering is one of the most popular hippy festivals in the UK, and one of the least commercial festivals on the circuit. It is a laid-back festival that truly keeps the spirit of Woodstock et al alive and kicking. It is the latest incarnation ( and of course the best) in a long line of Green Festivals. She has been going in some guise ever since the early 1980’s. The first stage was called a ‘Green Collective’ and was actually held in Worthy farm, the home of the iconic Glastonbury Festival.
The festival is commissioned by their charity The Green Charity. The GGC is a not for profit community Interest Charity. This means that that any proceeds from the festival are used to fund environmental and educational projects. They work so hard to be green and promote green. So much so that The UK Festival Awards awarded them accolade of the Greenest Festival in 2017. Now that is something to be proud of.
Hippies who head out to the Welsh Borders for the party will be able to take part in a huge number of events, including ‘skillshares’, in which talented members of the hippy tribe share their knowledge on a range of topics, ranging from crafts to permaculture. All things that will help you learn self sufficiency and to help care for the earth as best as you can.
The Radical Cinema will screen thought-provoking films, while The Raconteur’s Delight will feature everything from poetry reading to cabaret. You can even find classy steampunk-themed cocktail and temperance bar available for refreshments. Delicious! You cannot of course forget the amazing live bands that will be playing. Year in and year out there are some truly cracking live acts for you to see. Time to don your favourite hippie clothing, relax, let your hair down, dance and have fun…
In total, more than 100 acts will take to the stage, including musicians, magicians and mystics, ensuring that there is something for everyone. No matter what section of the hippy scene they may be in to.
In addition to plenty of things for the gown up, there are so many things for the little hippies too. From teaching the brood how to tie dye, puppet making, a play bus, and even some bungee trampolines. There is even a circus where you kiddies can learn aerial skills and acrobatics. They are going to want to be independent and do their own thing!
The site of the festival is undoubtedly one of the most enchanting you will find, with tipis, a fairy glade and even one of its own stone circles to bring some magic to the weekend’s proceedings.
Located in Chepstow which is an amazing walled town on the Welsh borders. The festival is on a hill with stunning views across the Wye Valley. The surrounding countryside is an Area of Outstanding Beauty.
If I were you, I would take some extra time and explore. Pack a poncho to keep to keep you nice and warm while you take a look around. There are caves, grotto’s and ancient woodland for you to explore. Take the fam and have fun!
So, dust off your hippie summer dresses, slip into your tie-dye clothes and prepare for a weekend of magic, mystery and mayhem at the Green Gathering.
Please just remember my fellow hippy’s, take your rubbish home with you. Reduce the use of plastic packaging where you can and of course recycle.
Peace, Love & Light xx
