Hippy Clothing UK Music Recommendations week 2

Hello guys
Thanks for coming back to have a look at this weeks music selection.

Like clothing music does vary and this weeks selections really show how you can enjoy a wide variety of music in your life instead of just sticking with one style.  Variety makes life a beautiful thing so make sure your get your music fix and expand what you listen to.

Each week I will be posting music that has influenced me.  I will always try and show a varied choice in music so everybody might be able to find something they have either never heard or already love and had forgotten about. Just remember these music choices are the kind of thing I listen to that I think might be of an interest.    If you have any suggestions then please let me know.

Psychedelic Rock/Indie
Gomez, whippin’ Piccadilly, of the Bring it On Album
Gomez are an English indie rock band from Southport in the UK. There music is inspiring sfun and funky (just like our clothes).
I have been a big fan of this band since the 90’s (yes they’ve been around that long). The Indie Psychedelic sound these guys create is infectious, you can’t help but bounce.  There are several singers in the band, the guy who sings as backing on this song also sings as lead on quite a few songs and just has a great voice.
Just let the song get going and hopefully you’ll love it.

Bob Dylan, All along the watch tower, 1967 album John Wesley Harding
Proabley one of the best know folk singers.  Some people may argue that his voice has never been great but I’ve always found it worked perfectly well with the songs he writes.  Often referred to as one of the greatest poets of our time Bob Dylan was heavily influence by Woody Guthrie and you can hear this in his music.

Fat Freddy’s Drop – Based On A True Story (Full Album)
Fat Freddy’s Drop are a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Originally a jam band formed in the late 1990s by musicians from other bands in Wellington, Fat Freddy’s Drop gradually became its members’ sole focus.
I came across these guys about a year ago and absolutely love their stuff. I’ve started you off on the first album which hooked me in. The sounds are great and well worth a listen.

Acid Techno
Aphex Twin, Bucephalus Bouncing Ball, Come to Daddy Album
Richard David James (born 18 August 1971), best-known by his alias Aphex Twin, is an Irish-born British electronic musician and composer based in Scotland. He is known for his influential and idiosyncratic work in electronic music styles such as IDM and acid techno in the 1990s, for which he won widespread critical acclaim.
This guy is a legend in the electronic music world, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live a few times, once at Glastonbury festival at the Glade stage (this is where Glade festival grew from) and once at hackney oceans. Mind blowing is all I can say. He makes and creates his own samples and in this piece of music he has sampled a ball being dropped on a hard service.
Check out other great artist s on the Warp Records Label.

drum and bass/Acid house/Jazz/Electroacoustic
Squarepusher,Bleep Street,
Squarepusher is the principal pseudonym adopted by Tom Jenkinson (born 17 January 1975), a UK-based recording artist. His compositions draw on a number of influences including drum and bass, acid house, jazz and electroacoustic music. His recordings are typified by a combination of electronic sound sources, live instrumental playing and digital signal processing.
This guy is a great artist who performs using live instruments to create his funky and interesting sounds. I’ve seen him a few times and if he’s at a festival go have a look.
Found on the same recorded label as Aphex Twin (Warp Records) you will notice some similarities.

Jimi Hendrix, All along the watch tower, Electric Ladyland 1968
What can you say about this guy, for anyone who has never heard of Jimi Hendrix then you are in for a treat. The guy was one of the best guitar players of his time. Some of his live performances didn’t go so well due to the large quantity of acid he took before going on stage. If you’ve ever seen the wood stock footage you’ll know what I’m talking about.
As I have featured the original Bob Dylan version of this song I thought it would be nice to have Jimi’s version as well as it really is out of this world. Little fact for people, Hendrix played with the guitar upside down and restrung backwards so he could play left-handed.
Sadly Jimi died at the age of 27, the post-mortem examination concluded that Hendrix aspirated his own vomit and died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates.

Ram Jam, Black Betty, from their self titled Album, 1977
Ram Jam was an American rock band formed in New York in 1977. They didn’t turn out much music and this hit was their biggest, don’t knock them though their album is pretty good if you like 70’s rock.
Turn your speakers up because this needs volume.  How can a song with so few words be so funky?

Chill Out
Tangerine Dream, The Dream Is Always The Same, Risky Business (soundtrack) 1984 or their 1985 Compilation album Dream Sequence
Tangerine Dream are a German electronic music group founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese.
This band was great for when I wanted to just relax and forget about life. Well worth a listen if you’ve in need of some chilled out music. These guys have over 100 albums so it was really hard to pick a song.
Tangerine Dream did the original score for GTA V.

Classical/Chill Out
Samuel Barber, Adagio for Strings
Samuel Osborne Barber II (March 9, 1910 – January 23, 1981) was an American composer of orchestral, opera, choral, and piano music. He is one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century
Adagio for Strings is arguably his best known piece of music, arranged for string orchestra from the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11.
Barber finished the arrangement in 1936, the same year that he wrote the quartet. It was performed for the first time in 1938, in a radio broadcast from a New York studio attended by an invited audience, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, who also took the piece on tour to Europe and South America.
I can’t express how beautiful this piece of music is. It has appeared on many recent chill out albums and is one of my favourite pieces of music.
