Richard Ashcroft, Check the Meaning from the album Human Conditions
Richard Ashcroft is well known for his part in band The Verve. Richard is a singer, song writer who also plays guitar.
This guy is a very clever writer and I confess I had been waiting for another album for a long time. There is a new album out now and he still sounds great.
We were at the Isle of Wight festival this year (2016) and I have to say Richard was absolutely brilliant live and probably the highlight of the festival for us.
So much energy mixed with a great voice makes for a good crowd pleaser.
Jerry Garcia & David Grisman, Shady Grove, from the album Shady Grove 1996
Jerome John “Jerry” Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician best known for his lead guitar work, singing and songwriting with the band the Grateful Dead, which came to prominence during the counterculture era in the 1960s. A legend in many eyes Jerry was a master at what he did and I can say without doubt a major influence in my music tastes. Please see Grateful Dead videos below.
David Grisman (born March 23, 1945, in Hackensack, New Jersey) is an American bluegrass/newgrass mandolinist and composer of acoustic music. In the early 1990s, he started the Acoustic Disc record label to help spread acoustic and instrumental music.
Them Crooked Vultures, No Ones Loves Me & Neither Do I, self titles album 2009
Them Crooked Vultures is a rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles in 2009 by John Paul Jones (former member of Led Zeppelin) on bass and keyboards, Dave Grohl (of Foo Fighters and formerly of Nirvana) on drums, and Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal and formerly of Kyuss) on guitar and vocals. The group also includes guitarist Alain Johannes during live performances.
Now it’s true I already love the Foo Figthers, Led Zepplin and Queens of the Stone Age but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong when I say these guys rock.
This is the first song off their album and it’s nice and funky especially around the 3min mark.
Ambient Drum and Bass
Omni Trio, Diffusion Loops, off the album Even Angels Cast Shadows 2001
Robert Haigh also known as Omni Trio, is a British electronic, ambient and experimental musician.
With many albums to his name I chose this song as this was the first album I was introduced to.
Grateful Dead, Beat it On Down The Line, from their 1st self titled album 1967
Its hard to really pick a song that shows how great these guys were. Without a doubt one of the best rock bands the world has seen, their live performances were legendary where they would travel around with the wall of sound which at the time was one of the biggest speaker sets any live band had and formed a massive wall of speakers. I strongly suggest you listen to the live/dead album which I have also included below as it is one of the best albums.
The Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. Ranging from quintet to septet, the band is known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, rock, improvisational jazz, psychedelia, and space rock, for live performances of lengthy instrumental jams, and for their devoted fan base, known as “Deadheads”.
Jerry Garcia made some great folk music as a solo performer and we have also included one of his songs, the man was a legend.
Stealers Wheel, Stuck in the Middle with You, taken from their self titled album in 1972
This song is a classic and was brought to the attention of many by the Tarantino movie Reservoir Dogs.
This really is a great song, it always makes me bounce.
Stealers Wheel are a Scottish folk rock/rock band formed in Paisley, Renfrewshire, in 1972 by former school friends Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty.
Chill Out/Post Rock
Sigur Ros, Glósóli from their album Takk 2005
I can’t praise this band enough, I have senn them a few times and everytime they blow my mind.
It was really hard to pick a song that showed what they can do, I still don’t think I’ve done them any justice.
If you like what you hear also listen to the albums,Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, Ágætis byrjun and Heima and Hvarf/Heim.
Sigur Rós (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈsɪːɣʏr ˈroːus]) is an Icelandic post-rock band from Reykjavík, who have been active since 1994.
Known for their ethereal sound, frontman Jónsi Birgisson’s falsetto vocals, and the use of bowed guitar.
Game of thrones: Sigur Ros have also lent their music to the hit TV show Game of Thrones.
Grateful Dead, Live/Dead full album, 1969
One of the most influential bands of the 60’s and 70’s.
I have recommend a song of theirs above from a studio album but these guys really came into their own during live
performances. This album has been part of my collection for many years and although the music does slow down at track 5 this is an hour into the album.
You don’t get many bands playing 20 minute songs nowadays and making them sound great.
The beautiful thing about this album is how the each song seamlessly blends into each other to provide a wonderful listening experience,
these guys really take you on an acid trip with this live performance, I wish I was there.
Presidents of the USA, Lump, from their self titled album 1995
Well these guys are just great, if you like funky beats and ridiculous lyrics then this band is for you.
They have so much fun, I saw them live a few years ago and they are crazy SOB’s.
Just to make things even stranger they play basitarist and guitbassist, makes for a good sound.
The Presidents of the United States of America, sometimes referred to as PUSA, The Presidents or Pot USA, are a twice Grammy-nominated American alternative rock band. The band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1993. The three-piece group currently comprises vocalist and “basitarist” Chris Ballew, drummer and vocalist Jason Finn with “guitbassist” and vocalist Andrew McKeag. “Guitbassist” and vocalist Dave Dederer was a member of the band for 11 years before leaving in 2004.
