Homeopathy – What is it??
Homeopathy gets labelled as the hippy medicine. I don’t have an issue with this however, those who see it that way just don’t know enough about it. It is a suitable form of treatment for all and for the majority of all illnesses and ailments. It is a safe, gentle and very natural system that helps to heal the body, relieve symptoms and improve overall health. Homeopathy is the 2nd most popular form of medicine in the world. A more natural and less invasive way of treatment. Having been around for more than 200 years it really is a great holistic remedy.
Created in 1796 by Samuel Hahenmann as a form of alternative medicine, he based homeopathy on the principal of “like treats like”. This is the belief that using a using a substance that is capable of causing symptoms can be used in smaller does to actually cure symptoms.
Like Treats Like
Samuel was looking for a way to reduce, if not eradicate the horribly damaging side effects that were associated with the medicines of his time. These medicines included the use of poisons and so he began experimenting. Firstly on himself and then on a host of healthy volunteers. He ran tests giving out smaller and smaller doses of the medicines and his findings were the start of something amazing. Hehenmann found that in addition to reducing the toxicity, with the lowered doses, the medicines actually became more effective.
For example – people that are allergic to bee stings can go through treatment where they are in fact given small amounts of the bee venom to make them immune. It really works!
A fellow bee keeper is actually allergic to her bees (well not just hers but all). Her reactions have been so severe that she has to carry around an epipen with her just in case. She is currently going though the desensitisation which takes over a year to complete. The last time that she was stung the reaction was so much less than previous and there was no need for the epipen.
Samuel documented his work and his findings and his works are what have formed the foundations of the homeopathic medicines as practised today. He has been described as a medical pioneer and praised as his tireless approach to improve medical practices. This approach is what led to his absolute insistence that medicines were tested before use.
Medicinal doses are known as remedies. The small doses drastically deduce the chances of a reaction. Some people my be allergic to some natural remedies however this is all assessed when you meet with your homeopathic practitioner. One of the great things about homeopathy is that instead of being treated as part of the population, you are assessed and treated as an individual. You are then given the best remedy that works for you as a person. Remedies are NOT what they have been told to prescribe… it is all about treating people as a whole, not just the body but the mind too.
As the doses are so low, remedies are safe for use by all, including children and pregnant women.
Remedies are made from natural substances and are diluted to created usable and non toxic doses. You will be surprised at some of the plants that are used. I have just finished a course of Rhus Tox which is in fact poison ivy. Well known for causing itching, swelling, skin irritation amongst many other things. It was used to reduce swelling and pain in my knee and well, it has worked.
I cannot recommend the use of homeopathic treatment enough. What is better than using nature to help cure you and stimulate your body’s natural healing process.
Although homeopathic remedies are not widely available on the NHS, you can find many of them online. You can find them in stores such as Boots and Holland & Barrett’s. It really is a fascinating subject and there is so much that we can all learn from it.
There are many famous advocates of homeopathic treatment including Prince Charles and even the Queen herself. The Queen is patron of Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine which was formerly the London Homeopathic Hospital.
