First off lets just work out why these tops are called ‘Baja’ or ‘Bah hah’ tops.
The Baja California Peninsula is a peninsula in Northwestern Mexico. Its land mass separates the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California. This is where the popular tops originated. It was the 1970s and California surfers we travelling over to Baja California, Mexico for surf trips, these surfer dudes were bringing these hooded shirts back with them as they liked them so much. They became associated with surfers and surfing in Mexican coastal towns, and worn as beachwear in the cooler weather.
These funky tops, which are called “sudadera de jerga” in Mexico, are also traditionally worn by Mexican-American and Mexican youths, especially young men, and can be considered a part of the cholo style. In the UK both men and women of all ages love this versatile piece of festival clothing and for many years now they have been a stable part of festival life in the UK. They are light weight, easy to wear as they are nice and comfy and quick to dry.
So what is a Mexican Jerga Baja top?
A Baja jacket is a type of jacket with a single large pocket on the front and a hood which is a more recent addition. These tops tend to have a pattern of some kind, we sell the vertical striped pattern jerga baja top. The jacket has draw strings that are made for decoration purposes only (back in the 70’s these draw strings did do something but nowadays they do not), these drawstrings are often flatter and more rectangular than most jacket drawstrings, and always made of the same material as the rest of the jacket.
What are Jerga Baja Tops made from?
Mexican Jerga Baja tops can be made from many different things, ours are made from a mix of 50% Cotton and 50% Acrylic making them supper soft and comfy. Some producers made these tops from fabric which has been made from recycled fibres, such as recycled T-shirts.
Other names these jackets are know by
They are known primarily as a “baja hoodie” or “drug rug” because of the genre in which they are popular but are also known as also known as a “Mexican Threads Hoodie”, Baja hoodie and Baja sweatshirt.
